A collection of independent short stories taking place prior to the Overture to a New War, some of which are adapted from the novel and some of which are completely original. Valley of White Silver (1–4) After graduating from military school, Reinhard and Kircheis are assigned to the front lines on a frozen planet. There they become entangled with their corrupt superiors and find themselves stranded behind enemy lines as a result of sabotage. Morning's Dream, Night's Song (5–8) While waiting for a promised promotion, Reinhard and Kircheis are dispatched by the military police to investigate a murder that occurred on their alma mater. While investigating, Reinhard's father passes away. Disgrace (9–12) Kircheis is sent on holidays to a recreational space station, but as his good nature would have it, he becomes entangled in a plot to murder the former admiral, Baron von Keyserling, who years ago mysteriously took all blame for a military disaster caused by his friend, Christoph von Basel. When the police chief, Hoffmann, pressures Kircheis to join the investigation, he has no other choices but to cut his holiday short. A Hundred Billion Stars, One Ambition (13–24) Reinhard finds himself serving as a commodore under the elderly admiral, Richard von Grimmelshausen, whom he considers incompetent. To show his worth, Reinhard proposes a land assault on an Alliance base during the middle of a battle. His newly-found rival Hermann von Luneberg hijacks the command of the operation. As it happens, the base they are about the attack is where the Rosen Ritter regiment is stationed and Luneberg is the former commander of that regiment. Note: The first three volumes (白銀の谷; 朝の夢,夜の歌; 汚名) were screened in the Tokyo's Tokuma Hall on February 9, 10 and 12 respectively, prior to its release on VHS rental on February 27, 1998.
