In the early 1900s, Saichi "Immortal" Sugimoto—dubbed for surviving brutal Russo-Japanese War battles—scrapes by in Hokkaido’s unforgiving wilderness during the postwar gold rush, driven to fund his fallen comrade’s widow. His fate shifts when he uncovers a map to hidden Ainu gold, forged by a criminal gang whose members tattooed its clues on their bodies.​

Sugimoto’s quest turns deadly: ruthless outlaws, rogue Japanese soldiers, and even the military hunt the treasure, killing anyone in their way. To survive Hokkaido’s freezing winters and deadly foes, he allies with Asirpa, a sharp-witted Ainu girl skilled in traditional hunting and herbalism, who seeks the gold to protect her people’s culture.​

A gripping blend of action, historical drama, and dark humor, it won the 9th Manga Taisho (2016), 22nd Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize (2018), 24th Japan Media Arts Festival Social Impact Award (2021), and 51st Nihon Mangaka Kyoukai-shou Grand Prize (2022). It was also nominated for the 20th/21st Tezuka Awards and 40th Kodansha Manga Awards (2016).​
